Enrolled Nursing, Andy has over thirty years experience of Nursing in inpatient and community settings, both in the United Kingdom and around Australia.
Originally training in Norwich, England as a
Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Andy spent three months travelling through SouthEast Asia in 1989,
ending up in Australia where he decided to stay.
Andy undertook further studies with a degree in Medical/Surgical Nursing at Sydney's
University of Technology and then went on to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Counselling and
Applied Psychotherapy at the
Jansen Newman Institute in New South Wales.
After performing psychotherapy in private practice and nursing in Sydney for a number of years, Andy returned to Tassie in 2000 and joined The
TAFE Tasmania where he got sidelined into teaching Information Technology, specialising in
Unix and
computer networking. He moved to the Health, Aged and Enrolled Nursing teaching team in 2007-2008, where he taught The Craft to new aspirants, whilst also undertaking
a Masters degree in Nursing.
A lecturing position at the
University of Tasmania followed, teaching undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing students and also developing
simulated training environments, including computer controlled mannequins used for training nursing and medical students and other clinical staff.
Andy returned to clinical work at the Department of Psychiatry in 2010, initially in the local acute inpatient unit and later in the community. He later went on to work as a
Credentialled Mental Health Nurse providing psychotherapy services for General Practice referred patients, under
the innovative Medicare funded
Mental Health Nurse Incentive Program.
In addition to his interests in Psych Nursing, Andy maintains a number of websites on various themes (some more dubious than others), including
Neolalia.com. He is also a
Justice of the Peace for Tasmania.
